If you’re planning to visit Samut Prakan, one of the first places that comes to mind is the Bang Pu Recreation Center — a well-known seaside getaway along the Gulf of Thailand, famous for its natural and ecological attractions.

This coastal sanctuary spans 639 rai and is home to rich, unspoiled nature with walking trails through mangrove forests and bird-watching spots. More than 200 bird species can be seen here throughout the year.
Most notably, from October to November, thousands  sometimes tens of thousands of seagulls migrate from Siberia to escape the winter and settle in this area, creating a breathtaking sight for visitors.

The Founding of Bang Pu Recreation Center

The Bang Pu Recreation Center was established in 1937 (B.E. 2480) by Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the Prime Minister at the time. His vision was to create a seaside retreat for the general public, thanks to its coastal location and close proximity to Bangkok. A long pier extending into the sea was constructed and named “Saphan Suk Ta” (Suk Ta Pier). Later on, the recreation center came under the supervision of the Royal Thai Army.

In the past, it also served as a rest and recovery facility for injured army personnel, in addition to being a public seaside retreat. However, in 1999 (B.E. 2542), the recovery facility was dissolved, leaving the area as a recreational destination only. The site was subsequently renovated, and the main building was renamed “Sala Suk Jai”. Inside, it features:

  • A restaurant

  • A ballroom/dance hall

  • Accommodation facilities
